WORKSHOP EVENT • MODELING PORTFOLIO

A bright beach day, a willing subject, and a lesson that still matters: beautiful portraits begin with direction, light, and trust.

On March 8, 2015, Joe Spedale Jr. led a beach photography workshop in Panama City Beach, Florida, where photographers learned how to work with intense beach light and soften it with a diffuser. This story celebrates Tristen Paige, the aspiring model who helped make the day possible.

It is also a look at the kind of Panama City Beach photography portfolio we love building: honest expressions, purposeful light, and images that give a person room to grow.

Thank you, Tristen Paige

Tristen Paige is a Panama City Beach model who helped make this workshop possible. Joe Spedale Jr. was Tristen’s first professional photographer. She originally hired Joe for family photos at Oaks By the Bay with her then-husband and their newborn baby. Joe later asked whether she would consider creating portfolio images in exchange for photos. She said yes, and Tristen became the first official mascot and face of Spedale Jr. Photography to appear on the company’s business cards at the time.

We cannot thank Tristen enough for the time she has spent in front of the camera helping photographers learn, practice, and grow. Her story is a reminder that a modeling portfolio can begin with one conversation, one opportunity, and a photographer who sees potential.

Learning to work with bright beach light

Bright beach light can be beautiful, but it can also create deep eye sockets, hard shadows, and blown highlights. The workshop focused on controlling the light instead of fighting it.

  • Watch the direction and height of the sun before posing the subject.
  • Place a diffuser between the sun and the subject to soften direct light.
  • Have one photographer or assistant hold the diffuser while another photographer makes the image.
  • Expose for the subject’s skin and highlights, then refine the background and composition.
  • Use the shade created by the diffuser to keep eyes comfortable and skin tones more even.
  • Give the model clear direction so the light and expression work together.

How to use a diffuser on a bright day

Place the diffuser between the sun and the subject so it intercepts the direct sunlight. The panel creates a broad, softer area of shade over the subject. Keep the diffuser close enough to cover the face and upper body, but out of the camera’s frame. Watch the edges of the shade as the sun or subject moves, and have an assistant hold the panel securely, especially in wind.

The diagram below shows the teaching setup: the sun hits the diffuser first, the diffuser softens the light over the subject, and the camera photographs from the opposite side.

These photographs show how a focused workshop can create a varied, useful gallery. The goal is not to make every frame look the same; it is to build a set of images that shows expression, posing, styling, and connection.

Building a modeling portfolio one session at a time

A strong portfolio is more than a collection of pretty pictures. It should help a model show range, communicate professionalism, and give future clients or collaborators a clear sense of who they are. Our professional portrait photography portfolio is built around that same idea: thoughtful direction, clean light, and photographs with a purpose.

Variety that feels real

Mix close portraits, full-length frames, movement, quiet expressions, and images that show how you connect with a location.

Direction you can use

Learn where to place your hands, how to move through light, and how to repeat a successful pose without looking stiff.

Images with a job

Build a gallery you can use for introductions, social profiles, casting conversations, and future collaborations.

What aspiring models can bring to a session

Bring two or three outfits with different shapes and textures, comfortable shoes, simple makeup options, and a few reference images that show the mood you like. The most important thing is communication: tell us what you want to learn, what you want to highlight, and where you hope the portfolio will take you.

We will help with posing, location choices, light, and a plan for the gallery. You do not need to arrive knowing everything. A portfolio-building session is also a chance to learn.
